On this day, March 17th in 1891, passenger ship SS Utopia ran into a parked battleship in the Bay of Gibraltar due to the captain’s massive error in judgment. He survived but the majority of the 880 passengers were killed. Including Marie Ehley, a 50-year-old woman from Germany.
